Peninsula Malaysia Fly-Drive holidays

An exciting Fly-Drive itinerary taking in the best of Peninsula Malaysia. Start in KL before picking up your car and heading to Malacca. Continue via the Cameron Highlands and Ipoh to Penang, including a stay in George Town.

SUGGESTED ITINERARY

Day 1 - UK to Kuala Lumpur
Fly from Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur, arriving the following day. Departures from other UK airports are also available, please ask for details.

Day 2 - Kuala Lumpur
On arrival in to Kuala Lumpur you'll be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel, for a three night stay. Our city stopovers are completely flexible, so if you’d like a day or two more or less just let us know!

Days 3-4 - Kuala Lumpur
Your next few days are free to explore Kuala Lumpur. For local food we’d suggest making your way to Jalan Alor one evening, where dozens of stalls selling traditional Malay and Chinese dishes offer some of the tastiest - and cheapest - food around. Pick your stall, grab a table and eat with the locals!

Day 5 - Kuala Lumpur to Malacca

This morning, collect your car and depart Kuala Lumpur for Malacca (approx 150 km / 2 hours 15 minutes, plus stops). We’d recommend jumping on the main North-South Expressway to get to Malacca easily, and to introduce you to Malaysian roads - we find them to be easy to navigate, not too busy and with a familiar standard of driving. On arrival in to Malacca check in to your preferred hotel for a two night stay.

Day 6 - Malacca

Spend the day exploring fascinating Malacca - this is one of our favourite parts of the Far East and we hope you love it as much as we do! The historic city centre is easy to explore on foot, and if you’re here at the weekend then head to Jonker Street, which turns in to a big night market (the streetfood is superb!)

Day 7 - Malacca to Putrajaya

Leave Malacca and head to Putrajaya (approx 180 km / 3 hours 15 minutes, plus stops). We’d suggest taking the coast route via Port Dickson and the nearby Cape Rachado Forest Reserve - on a clear day you can see Sumatra from here! Head on via historic Seremban and in to Putrajaya, where you’ll check in to your hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 8 - Putrajaya to the Cameron Highlands

Putrajaya is a quirky place to visit - this is the hub of Malaysia’s federal Government and is home to an impressive array of architecture, but still doesn’t have the population it was designed for. Take a trip on the lake and check out some of the beautiful buildings, before heading north to the Cameron Highlands (approx 240 km / 3 hours 30 minutes, plus stops). We’d jump back on the main North-South Expressway to Tapah, and head to the hills here. On arrival in to the Cameron Highlands check in to your hotel for a two night stay.

Day 9 - Cameron Highlands

Today is free for exploring the beautiful Cameron Highlands, with its tea plantations. We’d thoroughly recommend visiting the BOH Sungai Palas tea centre, where you can wander through the tea plantations, see how tea is made and have a pot of their produce in the visitor centre, with great views across the estate.

Day 10 Cameron Highlands to Ipoh

As you leave the Cameron Highlands and head to Ipoh you’ll descend from some of Peninsula Malaysia’s prettiest scenery back down to the lowlands - take in a strawberry farm on the way out of the Highlands (approx 90 km / 2 hours, plus stops). Close to Ipoh are a number of Cave Temples which are worthwhile visiting - Perak Tong has a 40 ft seated Buddha, and it’s not far off your route. On arrival in to Ipoh, check in to your chosen hotel for a two night stay.

Day 11 - Ipoh

Spend the day exploring Ipoh, and other nearby attractions. Ipoh is particularly well know for its food, but there’s plenty to see nearby - we’d recommend visiting Kuala Kangsar, which was the first stronghold of the British in Malaysia and the birthplace of the country’s rubber industry. Visit the Sultan Azlan Shah gallery, and the beautiful Masjid Ubudiah mosque.

Day 12 - Ipoh to George Town

Today head to Penang (approx 170 km / 2 hours 30 minutes, plus stops). We’d recommend travelling via Taiping - known as both the ‘city of peace’ and also the ‘rain city’, Taiping has beautiful architecture and plenty to see - but pack a brolley! On arrival in to Penang, drop off your car, make your way to your George Town hotel and check in for a two night stay.

Day 13 - George Town

Spend today exploring fascinating George Town. The central area of George Town is UNESCO heritage-listed for its architecture and cultural heritage, so there’s plenty to see and do here.

Day 14 - George Town to Penang’s Beaches

Hop in a cab for the short journey to Penang’s beaches, which are focused on Batu Ferringhi. Check in to your chosen hotel - we’ve included a five- night stay, but this is totally flexible.

Days 15-18 - Penang

Beach time in Penang! Batu Ferringhi has great beaches and easy access to the rest of the island, so is our top choice when it comes to places to stay.

Day 19 - Penang to UK

Return transfer to Penang airport for your return flight to the UK.
