Philadelphia
90 miles from New York and 140 from Washington DC, it’s easy to skip over Philadelphia, but the city which at one point was second only to London in the British Empire has plenty of interest to discover and and a lifestyle that’s easy to enjoy. Regular train connections to its more illustrious neighbours make a stopover in Philly very straightforward indeed.
The main points of interest in Philadelphia are close together, so a day or two will allow you enough time for the highlights. The historic centre of the city is at Independence Park, where several key sites from the period of independence - the Liberty Bell, National Constitution Centre and Independence Hall - can all be found, The Old City Hall is a stunning piece of architecture, located in an area of the city that is crammed with buildings from the 1700’s and 1800’s.
Philadelphia also has an impressive food scene - no visit to the city is complete without trying a Philly cheese steak of course - and with lively bars and cafes and a growing arts scene, Philadelphia is definitely worth a stopover if you’re travelling through the US’s North East Corridor.
