LA, Cali Coast, San Fran, Yosemite, Death Valley & Vegas Fly-Drive

SUGGESTED ITINERARY

Day 1 - UK to Los Angeles

Fly from London to LA, arriving later that day - departures from other UK airports are also available, of course. On arrival in to Los Angeles make your way to your chosen hotel, for a three night stay - our city stopovers are completely flexible, so if you’d like a day or two more or less just let us know!

Days 2-3 - Los Angeles

Today start your sightseeing of Los Angeles. Do bear in mind that LA is spread over a vast area, so allow plenty of time for getting around. Hollywood is probably LA’s most famous district, and it’s a ‘must see’ on any itinerary - start with the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where over 2000 celebrities are immortalised.

Day 4 - Los Angeles to Pismo Beach

Collect your rental car from the car hire depot at LA Airport, and head north along Pacific Highway 1 to Pismo Beach (approx 200 miles / 3 hours 15 mins, plus stops) - exclusive Malibu and swanky Santa Barbara are on the way, plus we’d follow the coast as far as Gaviota to avoid the busiest roads, and take in quirky Solvang on the way - mini-Denmark in California! On arrival in to Pismo Beach check in to your hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 5 - Pismo Beach to Monterey

Continue along Pacific Highway 1 to Monterey (approx 150 miles / 3 hours, plus stops) - there’s a lot to see on the way, and we’d suggest making stops at San Luis Obispo, San Simeon & Hearst Castle, Piedras Blancas elephant seal rookery and Carmel on the way. The section along Big Sur is particularly dramatic, so allow plenty of time! Check in to your hotel in Monterey for a two night stay.

Day 6 - Monterey

Spend the day exploring Monterey, a working class town with its eyes on the sea - the aquarium is impressive and developments such as Cannery Row and Fisherman’s Wharf have added appeal.

Day 7 - Monterey to San Francisco

From Monterey to San Francisco we’d suggest following Pacific Highway 1 along the coast via Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz (approx 120 miles / 2 hours 30 mins, plus stops), but if you fancy a slight detour when you approach San Fran then continue north across the iconic Golden Gate Bridge to take in the beautiful Point Reyes National Seashore, before retracing your steps south. On arrival in to San Francisco check in to your hotel for a three night stay.

Days 8-9 - San Francisco

Today start your sightseeing of San Francisco. The city has plenty to discover, and we love locations such as Lombard Street with its switchback incline made famous in Hitchcock’s ‘Vertigo’, the Ferry Building and the rocket-like TransAmerica Building. Do bear in mind that San Francisco has districts that are less salubrious, so keep your wits about you if you’re visiting areas such as SoMa and the Tenderloin. It’s worth noting that one of the city’s most renowned attractions - Alcatraz - must be prebooked if you're intending to visit.

Day 10 - San Francisco to Yosemite

Head out of town towards Yosemite (approx 200 miles / 3 hours 15 mins) starting by crossing the vast Oakland Bay Bridge. If you’re in good time head straight in to Yosemite National Park and the spectacular Yosemite Valley (extra 50 miles / 1 hour 30 mins), in the heart of the park. Check in to your hotel for a two night stay.

Day 11 - Yosemite

Spend the day exploring this spectacular national park - tomorrow you’ll cross the Tioga Pass (weather dependent), so today we’d recommend focusing on the Yosemite Valley area.

Day 12 - Yosemite to Death Valley

It’s a long drive today, but totally spectacular and extremely dramatic (approx 340 miles / 6 hours 30 mins, plus stops). As you head from the high altitude of Yosemite to the lowest place in the USA at Death Valley. From your hotel head across the spectacular Tioga Pass (weather dependent), and onwards to Mammoth Lakes - this is about half the journey time-wise, and Mammoth makes a good place to stop. Continue on via Bishop and Independence in to Death Valley National Park, visiting features such as Stovepipe Wells. On arrival in to Furnace Creek check in to your hotel for one night.

Day 13 - Death Valley to Las Vegas

This morning we’d suggest exploring Death Valley a little more - the views from Zabriskie Point are spectacular and at Dante’s View you can see the lowest and highest points in the contiguous USA. From Death Valley continue to Las Vegas (approx 145 miles / 2 hours 15 mins), perhaps detouring to Red Rock Canyon before arriving in to Vegas. On arrival in to Las Vegas drop your car off at the airport depot and make your way to your chosen hotel, for a three night stay - we have a range of hotel options to choose from, and your length of stay in Las Vegas is flexible.

Days 14-15 - Las Vegas

Today start your sightseeing and discovery of Las Vegas. The city comes alive at night, with numerous world-class shows to choose from. Book tickets well in advance for high profile shows and ‘must sees’, or see what’s available when you arrive if you’re open to suggestions.

Day 16 - Return

Make your way back to Las Vegas airport for your return flight to the UK, arriving the next day.

A superb California fly-drive itinerary taking in the California Coast from Los Angeles to San Francisco, along with Yosemite National Park and Death Valley, finishing in Las Vegas.
