One of our most popular short driving safaris, combining the three key areas of mountains, lakes and plains. The Thorn Tree Safari includes the famous game viewing lodge Treetops, and spends two nights at the world-famous game reserve, the Masai Mara. This four-night safari offers a wonderful combination of mountain scenery and plains dotted with game.

ITINERARY

Day 1 - Depart

Fly from Heathrow to Nairobi, arriving the next day. Regional departures from around the UK are also available.

Day 2 - Aberdares

You’ll be met on arrival at Nairobi airport, and transferred to the nearby Safari Lounge, where you can freshen up and store any beach luggage that you don’t want to take on safari. Then depart for the Aberdares (180 km), arriving at Outspan in time for lunch. After lunch, it’s a short journey onwards to Treetops, the world renowned rustic tree house which is legendary for its historic royal connection. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure. Overnight at Treetops (lunch and dinner included).

Day 3 - Lake Nakuru-Lake Naivasha

Today is a beautiful drive to Lake Nakuru (180 km), crossing the Equator on the way. Enjoy a game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park, where rhino sightings are common, and flamingoes congregating on the lake shore give the area a pink tinge. After lunch at Lake Nakuru Lodge, continue your journey to Lake Naivasha (80 km - approximately 1 hour), where over 450 species of birds have been recorded. Check in to your lodge, which offers a wonderful mix of tranquillity in serene surroundings, and a varied number of sporting activities for both the energetic and the more laid back. Overnight at Lake Naivasha Country Club (breakfast, lunch and dinner included).

Day 4 - Masai Mara

Drive to the magnificent Masai Mara (270 km), home to countless animal species including the 'big five' and a multitude of plains game. Lunch at your lodge - Keekorok Lodge was the first of its kind to be built in Kenya's Masai Mara National Reserve, and it still retains its intrinsic years of history, tradition, character and charm. There's always plenty of activity around the waterhole, but during the migration the lodge is enveloped by the swarming mass of animals. In the afternoon a game drive will introduce you to the Mara’s incredible variety of game. Overnight at Keekorok Lodge (breakfast, lunch and dinner included).

Day 5 - Masai Mara

Enjoy an early morning game drive with further opportunities to see the superb wildlife, followed by breakfast at the lodge - alternatively, there’s an opportunity for a hot air balloon ride over the Masai Mara (optional extra) in the early morning, followed by breakfast (complete with sparkling wine) in the bush - it’s an amazing experience, and one we’d highly recommend. The Masai Mara is a truly exceptional area, and your time here will be like working your way through a wildlife guidebook - being a fairly small reserve it’s easy to get fairly close to the wildlife. A second game drive will take place in the late afternoon. Overnight at Keekorok Lodge (breakfast, lunch and dinner included).

Day 6 - Depart

Return to Nairobi by road (300 km), or for a supplement there's the option to fly by light aircraft from the Masai Mara to Nairobi (do bear in mind that this limits your luggage allowance for the whole safari). When you arrive in to Nairobi proceed with your onward travel arrangement (breakfast included).

Notes

This is a group itinerary which operates with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 6 passengers, all guaranteed a window seat.

On occasion the itinerary may operate in a different order, or different lodges used according to availability and road conditions.

Travel times vary on road conditions and game sightings.

Pack a mixture of warm and light clothing in soft bags, plus sunglasses, camera and insect repellent.
