Day 1: Negombo
On arrival, transfer to the Jetwing Sea in Negombo and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure to relax before enjoying a welcome dinner with your tour group and guide. Dependent on when you arrive, you might like to visit nearby Negombo to mingle with the locals, or alternatively just chill out by the pool or visit the spa at the hotel. Stay: Jetwing Sea (dinner included).
Day 2: Negombo to Anuradhapura
Transfer to Anuradhapura, the first capital of Sri Lanka and an ancient city home to dagobas, monasteries, palaces and royal parks. Here you will enjoy a guided tour of some of the cities most sacred sites including the Mirisawetiya Stupa, a sacred Bodhi tree and the Brazen Palace. After lunch you will continue on your tour, visiting the oldest dagoba in the city, Fearless Hill and if time permits, an ancient temple complex. Stay: Palm Garden Village (breakfast and dinner included).
Day 3: Anuradhapura to Habarana
Early morning leave Anuradhapura with a packed breakfast and enjoy a jeep safari into Wilpatu National Park. Wilpatu is home to plenty of natural lakes and basins that fill with rainwater and draw plenty of birdlife as well as elephants. You’ll also find leopard, sloth bear and water buffalo within its boundaries, if you can spot them! Late afternoon transfer south to the Cultural Triangle; a delightful drive through paddy fields and rubber plantations before arriving in Habarara where you will stay for three nights. Stay: Cinnamon Lodge (breakfast, lunch and dinner included).
Day 4: Habarara
Enjoy a morning at leisure to ready yourself for the big climb this afternoon. Perhaps take a tuktuk into town, or just chill out at the hotel. After lunch you will be taken to visit the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress where you can climb its 1300 steps to the ruined palace upon its peak. There are a few places to stop en route and plenty to see so you don’t have to go all the way to the top but the views from there are pretty spectacular. Stay:Cinnamon Lodge (breakfast and dinner included).
Day 5: Habarana
This morning enjoy a cycling tour of the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to some spectacular ruins. If tired, there is also a vehicle available so you needn’t miss out. This 12th Century Sinhalese capital is one of the best archaeological sites in Sri Lanka and contains the ruins of the Royal Palace as well as Gal Vihara where three giant Buddha statues are carved out of rock This afternoon you’ll visit Minneriya National Park, famed for its elephants. Due to the reservoir, great herds of elephants congregate at its lush edges during the dry seasons, making it a must-do for elephant lovers. Minneriya is also home to an abundance of birds, monkeys and deer, and you may also spot a leopard or two if you’re lucky. Stay: Cinnamon Lodge (breakfast and dinner included).
Day 6: Habarana to Kandy
Today you’ll visit Hiriwaduna in the morning before moving on to Kandy in the evening. On arrival in Hiriwaduna village you’ll enjoy a varied trek to the reservoir, where the trunks of long dead trees stand stark against lush wetland greenery. Here you’ll have a picnic breakfast before returning to the hotel and leaving for Kandy. In Kandy you’ll be free to choose your own lunch spot, whether it’s in town or back at the hotel. In the afternoon you’ll visit the Temple of the Tooth for the evening pooja. Stay: Suisse Hotel (breakfast included).
Day 7: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya
Enjoy a morning at leisure to explore or relax. In the afternoon you’ll board the train from Peradeniya to Nanu Oya. Air-conditioned and with guaranteed seats, the views are breathtaking. Continue to Nuwara Eliya which sits 6000 feet above sea level and is filled with rolling hills covered in tea. Stay: St Andrew’s (breakfast and dinner included).
Day 8: Nuwara Eliya
Leave by jeep for the Horton Plains for a three hour scenic trek through Sri Lanka’s highest plateau (7200 feet above sea level) to the renowned precipice of ‘World’s End’ and the beautiful Bakers Falls. Spectacular views, a bracing climate, rare birds and butterflies are your reward for the climb. This afternoon enjoy high tea on the lawn at St Andrews, which will serve up a selection of Sri Lankan teas as well as other Sri Lankan and quintessentially British delights. Stay: St Andrew’s (breakfast and dinner included).
Day 9: Nuwara Eliya to Negombo
Leave after breakfast stopping en route for an exhilarating 1-2 hour white water rafting excursion on the Kelani River in Kitulgala (level three) before continuing on to the airport or your chosen beach hotel (breakfast included).
