Ceylon Tour

HOME > Sri Lanka > Tours > Ceylon Tour

Day 1: Mount Lavinia

On arrival you will transfer to your hotel where you have an afternoon at leisure to relax. If you arrive early in the day, you could hop on a tuk tuk into Colombo to explore. In the evening you’ll get to meet your group at a welcome dinner hosted by your guide (approx. 5½ miles, 20 minutes). Stay: Mount Lavinia (dinner included).

Day 2: Mount Lavinia to Habarana

This morning your tour begins with a short drive to the spice plantations of Matale. Here you’ll be taken on an interactive guided tour of the plantation which is home to some of Sri Lanka’s most valuable spices. You’ll then take part in a cooking course, where an experienced chef will teach you how to make a traditional Sri Lankan curry. Should you choose, you can then have it for lunch! You can also pop into the spice shop to pick up some to take home, should you wish. After lunch the tour will continue on to Habarana where you will stay for two nights (approx. 130 miles, 5½ hours). Stay: Chaaya Village (breakfast, lunch and dinner included).

Day 3: Sigiriya

An early start for your visit to Sigiriya to beat the crowds and the heat. If you wish to visit the ruined palace at the top you will have to climb up many stairs, so sensible shoes are a must. The views from the top are more than worth the climb however, and Lion Gate and the frescoes half way up are beautiful and provide a great spot to rest. This afternoon there is an optional sightseeing tour of Polonnaruwa, the 12th Century Sinhalese capital and UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the best archaeological relic sites in Sri Lanka, it contains the remains of countless temples, palaces and dagobas. Just outside the ancient city is a small town with some shops, ideal for souvenir hunting. Stay: Chaaya Village (breakfast and dinner included).

Day 4: Sigiriya to Kandy

After breakfast you will continue your tour to Kandy, stopping en route at Minneriya National Park where you will enjoy a morning Jeep safari. In the park you’ll find a plethora of birdlife, as well as great herds of elephant and possibly a leopard or two. Continue on to Kandy, where you can either transfer straight to the hotel or get off and explore the city for a couple of hours before the bus returns to pick you up. Stay: Hotel Suisse (breakfast included).

Day 5: Kandy

Get to know Kandy a little better with a morning at the beautiful Royal Botanical Gardens, where you’ll find a vast selection of Sri Lanka’s native flora, many exotic species, and a renowned orchid collection that’s one of the finest in the world. This afternoon you’ll visit the famous Temple of the Tooth Relic, said to house an ancient relic of Lord Buddha himself. Here you’ll find not only the temple, but also the Royal Palace, Audience Hall and the Mahamalua, where some other ancient relics can be found.

Later you will experience a Kandyan dancing and culture show which will teach you more about the history and culture of Kandy and Sri Lanka as a whole. Stay: Hotel Suisse (breakfast included).

Day 6: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya

After breakfast you’ll drive toward the hill country and Nuwara Eliya, set in a stunning mountain valley some 6,000 feet above sea level. The landscape here is of rolling green hills covered in tea plantations, with early morning fog gathering in the dips of the valleys. This afternoon you’ll enjoy a sightseeing trip to see all the natural wonders in the area. From those beautiful hills, to rushing waterfalls and spot the wildlife that call this area home. Stay: Jetwing St Andrews (breakfast included).

Day 7: Nuwara Eliya

This morning you can visit the Horton Plains, home to beautiful landscapes including rolling grassland and verdant forest, with the renowned World’s End precipice a popular destination, as well as the impressive Baker’s Falls. The plains are also inhabited by a great many species of plants and animals, including the sambhar deer and the Sri Lankan blue magpie. On your return enjoy afternoon tea, where you can sip traditional Sri Lankan tea whilst you enjoy both British and local delights. Today you can also visit a tea plantation and non-working factory. Here you’ll learn about how to pick tea as well as the process that it goes through to get from the rolling hills to your cup. You’ll even get to try a few varieties, and can purchase some to take home. The rest of your afternoon is at leisure. Stay: Jetwing St Andrews (breakfast included).

Day 8: Nuwara Eliya

Today you will either continue on your journey if you’ve chosen to extend your stay in one of Sri Lanka’s national parks or beach resorts, or transfer to the airport for your onward journey (breakfast and lunch included).
