BEST BEACH FOR . . . PEOPLE-WATCHING
Grab yourself a beer at a beachside bar and watch the world go by – welcome to Copacabana! The world’s most spectacular city on the beach, Rio life revolves around the sand, and Copacabana is the city’s most famous – it’s a long, wide beach full of beautiful people out to see and be seen.
Rio's two main beaches - Copacabana and Ipanema - are side by side along the city's Atlantic coast, with the Sofitel Hotel separating them. Ipanema has a more upmarket feel, but Copacabana certainly wins for people-watching. Here, keep-fit fanatics jog along the beach (the older crowd have found speed-walking in a big way) while games of volleyball take place.
Just off the beach a promenade attracts joggers and cyclists out to keep fit, while between the two a number of bars are just perfect for people-watching – see the young crowd playing beach volleyball, the hunks in trunks jogging by, the girls parading in the smallest thongs imaginable and the older ladies who really ought to grow old more gracefully. Take it all in over a few ice-cold Antarctica beers – beaches don’t get any better than this! |
