Darren, your guide to Kyoto from Escape Worldwide.
“Kyoto is an incredible place of culture & tradition - my favourite is the Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine, but it’s all spectacular!”

Kyoto is one of the world’s most culturally-rich cities, and is home to 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites and over 2000 temples & shrines - it’s the place to go to see what Japan is all about as Kyoto is so intertwined with Japanese history and culture. Easy to explore and packed with interest, Kyoto should be on the itinerary of any visitor to Japan and makes a great place to start.
What to do in Kyoto
Allow yourself plenty of time to take in Kyoto’s incredible sights - there’s a myriad of temples, shrines and castle, bamboo groves, gardens and mountain scenery, plus there’s also a modern side to the city with great restaurants, bars and shops. Kyoto is also a good base for a day visit to nearby Nara, home to the Great Buddha - along with a further 7 World Heritage sites. Take sturdy walking shoes and a decent camera!
Where to stay in Kyoto
There are a number of hotel options close to Kyoto JR Station, which is great for transport links but lacks character. Higashiyama is quintessentially Kyoto but with a price tag to match - our favourite area is the downtown district close to Kyoto City Hall, with good transport links for sightseeing, restaurants and bars close by and a good mix of hotel options.
Holiday ideas to Kyoto
There’s so much to see in and around Kyoto that you’ll need three or four days to take it all in. As Kyoto has a more relaxed feel than some of Japan’s other cities it makes a great place to start any itinerary, especially with easy access from Osaka’s Kansai airport. Combining Kyoto with pretty much any other part of Japan is easy via the high speed rail network, and Kansai Airport also has excellent links to other areas of Asia.

ANA Crowne Plaza Kyoto is the ideal hotel for both sightseeing and business purposes, situated right in front of the prominent world heritage site Nijo-Castle and with easy access to transport links.
