What to do in Makadi Bay, Soma Bay, El Quesir and Marsa Alam
Relax! Holidays to this stretch of the Red Sea Coast are relaxing, so a stay here is ideal after a Nile cruise for a great Egypt twin centre holiday. Port Ghalib at Marsa Alam is a developing resort with plans for a variety of restaurants, bars and shops along its Corniche. There are good kids facilities and the second largest man-made swimming lagoon in the world here! El Quesir is a small, traditional town with an uncommercialised feel, while Soma Bay is a purpose-built resort with impressive golf course, and predominantly 5* hotels. Makadi Centre offers a number of shops where your haggling skills can be fine-tuned, or head to the Senzo Mall, 15 km north, for international-style shopping. Visit Egypt's historical sites at Luxor or Cairo, both of which are accessible from most of the resorts. Alternatively, head underwater for excellent snorkelling and scuba diving, or just relax in the sun!
Where to stay in Makadi Bay, Soma Bay, El Quesir and Marsa Alam
All of the resorts of the Red Sea Coast offer a range of good quality hotels, many of which are fairly new and modern, with good standards. Many hotels in this area operate on an All Inclusive basis, which works well in the quieter resorts.
Holiday ideas to Makadi Bay, Soma Bay, El Quesir and Marsa Alam
Spend a week or two relaxing on the beaches of your chosen resort along the Red Sea Coast, or combine a holiday on the beach with other areas of Egypt - combine a week’s Nile cruise with the beach, or visit Cairo, Luxor and other areas too. Due to a lack of domestic flights serving Marsa Alam airport, this resort is the trickiest to combine with other parts of Egypt.
Getting to the Red Sea Coast
Holidays to Makadi Bay, Soma Bay and El Quesir are served by Hurghada airport, which has direct flights from Gatwick and Manchester year-round, with flights at certain times of year from other UK airports. The airport is around 45 minutes transfer from Makadi Bay, 60 minutes from Soma Bay and 2 hours from El Quesir.
Marsa Alam airport has direct flights from Gatwick and Manchester at certain times of year, with hotels being 15-45 minutes from the airport. Marsa Alam can also be reached from Hurghada airport in around 3 hours.
Hurghada airport has frequent flight connections from Cairo, making Cairo plus Makadi Bay and Cairo plus El Quesir holidays easy. Marsa Alam has few domestic connections. It’s around a 4-5 hour road transfer from Luxor to Makadi Bay, 4 hours to Soma Bay and El Quesir, and around 5 hours to Marsa Alam.

South of Hurghada, the Red Sea coast runs for miles and miles through unspoilt scenery where the desert meets the sea. Purpose-built resorts such as Makadi Bay and Soma Bay offer quality hotels and a relaxed atmosphere, while the more traditional town on El Quesir also offers a more local side. Diving is popular in the area, or just relax on the beach or by the pool!
