A few days in Siem Reap will give you time to explore one of South East Asia's most impressive sights - the ancient city of Angkor. This massive complex was, at one time, one of the most important cities in the world, and today, the scale of the ruins shows why. It's an awe inspiring place spread out over a wide area, with temples in various states of disrepair, giving an amazing sense of what once was.
What to do in Siem Reap
The highlight of any visit is the renowned complex of Angkor Wat, but there's a great deal more besides. We'd suggest spending three days in the area, allowing you to take in the main Angkor Complex, taking in Angkor Thom and the Bayon, the Elephant Terrace and, of course, magnificent Angkor Wat itself. You'll also be able to visit some of the more remote sites, including Pre Rup, Bantey Kdei and the mystical Ta Prohm.
Where to stay in Siem Reap
Siem Reap itself is a friendly town with a good range of hotels and plenty of places to try traditional Khmer food. Although Siem Reap is growing quickly, it remains an easy-going, charming town. Hotel options are good, with some excellent hotels now available. Those towards the north end of the town offer easier access to the Temples, while those closer to the market area are handy for exploring the town itself.
Holiday ideas to Siem Reap
It's possible to combine a visit to Siem Reap with time elsewhere in Cambodia and Indochina, or in the Far East generally. All Thai beach resorts can be combined with our Indochina itineraries, as can Singapore or Malaysia - we'd be delighted to put together your ideal itinerary if it's not shown here - just ask!
