Cruising along the Nile in Upper Egypt

At Escape Worldwide we've been visiting the resorts of Egypt and the Red Sea in recent weeks, to see for ourselves what a holiday there is all about, following the recent change in government. Darren moved away from the coast to see some of Egypt's historical attractions, taking in the temples and tombs around Luxor, his favourite part of the Nile.

"I visited the Nile at Luxor to check out some cruise boats. One of the main things about Luxor at the moment is how quiet the main sites are, so if you fancy having the Temple of Karnak or other renowned sites pretty much to yourself, now is the time to go! There are numerous Nile cruise boats available so it's hard to know where to start, but make sure you pick one that includes all the main sightseeing, as costs can build up if this isn't included.

I've been to this part of Egypt a number of times - I'm totally fascinated by the history of the region, and as there's so much to see in such a small area it's one of the best places to combine sightseeing and relaxation. One difference I noticed on this trip, however, was how many visitors were around - many of the main sites such as the Temple of Karnak and Luxor Temple had very few visitors at them, which meant I could get some excellent photos without the usual crowds in them! Our guide told us how British visors were returning to Luxor, but other nationalities such as the Russians and Germans were less evident. As soon as they start to return in the next few weeks, the crowds will return - get in quick, is my advice!

On this trip I visited a number of Nile cruise boats, and I have to say I was impressed by the quality I saw! New boats are rarely allowed to be launched on the Nile, so the best boats are those that focus on service. I stayed on the MS Grand Rose, which had particularly spacious cabins (very useful if it gets a bit too hot outside and you want to retreat to your cabin to chill out!) and a huge sundeck with plenty of space. One of the nicest features about this boat - apart from the excellent food - was the swimming pool. I've been on a number of boats that have tiny pools that aren't really worth the effort, and I can understand the problems of having a larger pool on a boat, but the Grand Rose has a pool that's surrounded by a flat area of water, just ankle deep, that's perfect for dipping your feet in while reading or book or having a drink!"
