At Escape Worldwide we've been visiting the resorts of Egypt and the Red Sea in recent weeks, to see for ourselves what a holiday there is all about, following the recent change in government. Darren returned to Hurghada, a resort which has changed a fair amount in recent years, with new hotels, great restaurants and some excellent shops and nightlife available. |

"Set on the shores of the Red Sea at the closest point to the Nile Valley, Hurghada has developed over the years in to one of our favourite resorts, with a modern feel but still with an Egyptian identity. It's easy to visit the Nile during a beach stay to visit some of the world-renowned temples and monuments (I did the journey in under 4 hours) making Hurghada a superb choice for both relaxation and interest. There's also a new wave of restaurants, shops and bars in the resort.
It's a few years since my last visit to Hurghada, and it's changed quite a bit. To be honest I wasn't Hurghada's biggest fan as I found it to be a bit too sprawling with no real focus, and a bit messy. Recent changes, though, have improved it no end to my mind, and it's now one of my favourite Red Sea resorts!
Hurghada Marina is one of the best new developments along the coast, located in the old Sakkala area - there's a good range of modern funky bars and clubs (Ministry of Sound are here), restaurants of various cuisines, and a vibrant nightlife -
on one night out here i headed back to my hotel at 1 am when the clubbers were just getting started! Along the Promenade the atmosphere is a little more sedate, with a more traditional feel - there's a great range of shops that are perfect for browsing through, and excellent dining options. To my mind this is the perfect combination - lively one evening, more relaxed the next!
One of Hurghada's strengths is its location, being on the Red Sea at its closest point to the Nile at Luxor. I I popped over to Luxor for a spot of sightseeing, the journey taking just under four hours - not bad, to travel from a beach hotel to unique World Heritage sites! At the moment many of the hotels in Hurghada are fairly quiet, so the service was really attentive. On my numerous visits to Egypt over the years I've rarely been disappointed by the service, but on this trip I found it to be second to none!" |
