Hardly something you're likely to serve at your next dinner party, but Karen had the rather dubious pleasure of trying locusts in the Cambodian capital. Served from streetside stalls in bags (much like you'd grab a packet of crisps), she did resist temptation on the other local delicacy served in a similar manner - tarantula legs!
"I never used to be great with trying different food, rarely even opting for a curry, but the more I travel the more adventurous I seem to get! I was in Cambodia with a tour group, travelling between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh by road. When we arrived in to the Cambodian capital, we stopped at one of the local markets for a quick snack. As with the other countries of Indochina, baguettes are popular and available just about everywhere, but on this occasion my adventurous streak came out.
Our guide found me something a bit more 'local' from one of the food stalls - I had a choice between fried locusts (ready salted flavour, of course) or tarantula legs! Well, it really had to be the locusts (the tarantula legs were still hairy - I'm getting more adventurous but I do still have limits!) and they came in a small bag, just like you'd have a packet of crisps. The locusts had been deep-fried in hot oil, and were rather chewy and salty. I think my best description would be 'not as bad as I was expecting' but I don't think I'll be asking my local pub to start stocking them!" |
