WELCOME |
To
the first-time visitor, Bangkok may come as a bit of a culture
shock - modern skyscrapers sitting next door to ancient temples,
chaotic traffic and bustling streets. It's certainly the most
Asian of the Far East cities, and a few days will reveal the
treasures of this wonderfully fascinating capital. Bangkok's
infamous Patpong district is great fun for a spot of souvenir
hunting, or lively Sukhumvit has a host of bars, restaurants
and shops. |

WHAT
TO DO |
There's
a massive amount of interest in Bangkok, from ancient temples
and intricate culture to modern shopping centres and lively
nightlife. It's a fascinating mix of cultures and life, which
becomes more interesting the more you get to know it. The Grand
Palace is a good place to introduce yourself to Thailand's history.
Take a river bus for a different view of the city. At night,
shop in the night markets or sample the local fiery cuisine.
Don't let the City's raucous nighttime reputation deter you
though - the more racy elements of Bangkok are confined to specific
locations, and easy to avoid if you prefer to. |
WHERE
TO STAY |
Bangkok's
hotels are located throughout the city, with many of the five
star hotels on the river. Elsewhere, hotels on Silom Road and
Sukhumvit Road benefit from easy access to the Skytrain and
underground, making getting around easier, plus both area have
a good range of bars, shops and restaurants close by. Other
locations such as Chinatown offer a more local atmosphere. |
HOLIDAY
IDEAS |
We'd
generally suggest three or four nights in Bangkok before moving
on to another part of Thailand or the Far East. A Bangkok plus
beach twin centre holiday is extremely popular, or combining
Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Thai beach makes a fascinating multi
centre holiday. Bangkok also makes a great gateway to the Far
East, allowing combinations of Bangkok plus Bali, Hong Kong,
Singapore and more. |
GETTING
THERE |
Bangkok
is about an 11 hour flight from the UK. Flights to Bangkok are
available from various UK airports - holidays shown here are
based on direct flights from Heathrow, for the most straightforward
journey. Flights from Gatwick and Manchester are available,
often at a lower price, while departures from other UK airports
are also available. |
