WELCOME |
An
enigmatic and little-visited country, Laos has a long history
and some fascinating sights for the visitor. It's a country
little-touched by the outside world in comparison to her neighbours,
with a small population and a traditional way of life. It's
a destination of temples and markets, ancient history and
present-day culture where the pace of life is slow but the
welcome is warm. The ancient
capital of Luang Prabang and the modern capital of Vientiane
are the main highlights of a visit to this country. Both hold
a wealth of historical interest, with Luang Prabang being
the religious and Royal capital, whereas Vientiane holds power
today and has a strong French colonial influence. |

WHAT
TO DO |
The
Capital of Laos, Vientiane is an interesting city with a slow
pace of life, situated on the banks of the mighty Mekong River.
There's plenty of interest to see, with numerous temples demonstrating
the city's long history. It's also worth spending a few nights
in Luang Prabang, the Country's cultural and spiritual centre,
and a good base for exploring the north of the Country. |
WHERE
TO
STAY |
There's
an improving selection of places to stay in Laos, especially
in Luang Prabang, the most popular place for foreign visitors.
Outside of the main areas, options can be more limited. In recent
years, standards generally have improved, and there are now
some world-class hotels available throughout Laos. |
HOLIDAY
IDEAS |
Laos
makes a great destination to combine with other locations in
the region, giving the visitor a fascinating multicentre holiday.
It's easy to combine Luang Prabang and Vientiane with numerous
parts of Thailand, including Vietnam and Cambodia or Bangkok
and the beaches of Thailand. We've put some suggestions here,
but if your ideal combination isn't featured, just ask!
Most visits to Laos run hassle-free,
but do bear in mind that this is a lesser-developed country
than other destinations in the area, and changes to flight schedules
and hotel bookings can be made with no warning. |
GETTING
THERE |
Bangkok
acts as the main gateway to Indochina, with a wide selection
of flights from the UK to here, and onward flights to most cities
in the region, including Vientiane and Luang Prabang in Laos. |
