CITY TOUR |

Full Day Tour with Lunch |

A
full day of exceptional sightseeing in and around Beijing.
Begin the morning at the vast Tian’anmen Square, the
largest public square in the world. Built in 1417, it has
long been a place of gathering for the Chinese and is central
to many landmarks in Chinese history. Indeed from the balcony
of the North Gate the founding of the People’s Republic
of China was proclaimed by Chairman Mao in 1949. Close by
lies the enchanting Forbidden City, so called as it was off-limits
to all but the Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties for
over 500 years. Within the imposing walls of this vaulted
example of classical Chinese architecture is housed a mesmerising
complex of imperial palaces containing over 1 million ancient
artefacts. Each depict in detail the luxurious ceremonies
and lavish lifestyles of the 24 Emperors who remained domiciled
here in pampered isolation. Following lunch, continue on to
the Summer Palace, the seasonal retreat for the Qing Emperors.
Located on the edge of the city, it is set within expansive
classical lakeland gardens interspersed with traditional temples
and beautiful pavilions. Late afternoon journey to the stunning
Temple of Heaven, China’s largest temple and altar complex
and revered as the most perfect example of Ming architecture.
The evening is at leisure, perhaps pre-book one of our optional
evening experiences at the Peking Opera or Acrobatic Show. |

Make
the short two hour journey to the less crowded Mutianyu section,
most notable for its meandering chain of Ming Dynasty guard
towers. Originally built over 2,000 years ago, the Great Wall
stretches an astonishing 6,500km from the remote Liaoning
in the east to the arid expanses of the Gobi desert in the
west. Take a cable car to its summit and enjoy the memorable
experience of a walk along its fortified ramparts and admire
the far-reaching, breathtaking panoramic vistas that can be
enjoyed atop this remarkable example of human endeavour. After
lunch return to Beijing and the rest of the day is at leisure. |

Half Day Tour with Lunch |
|
An
exciting and informative half day tour of Beijing’s
historic Hutong district. Beijing was originally encircled
by a protective city wall, within which each home was similarly
surrounded. Together these walled houses and shops formed
a labyrinthine city, connected by a bewildering series of
narrow lanes, broken occasionally by a quaint courtyard or
shaded leafy garden. From the comfort of your two-seater rickshaw,
take a fun and informative tour to discover another world,
one steeped in the ways and traditions of a bygone era, albeit
just minutes away from central Beijing. Lunch is provided
in the home of a local family whose poignant stories bring
to life the recent history of this amazing country, a revealing
glimpse into a side of Beijing life rarely experienced. |
