The largest city in the Caribbean, Havana oozes charm and appeal, but in a laid-back, effortless way. Spend a few days exploring the cobbled streets of Old Havana, staying in a converted merchant's house and taking in a cafe, an art gallery or a museum, spending evenings in a local bar with a cool beer or in a Casa De La Musica with some hot salsa.
Parque Central square is an important landmark and staying around this part of Havana is a good idea. Relax with a cool beer at the pavement terrace at the Hotel Inglaterra, overlooking the square, or stay in one of the hotels with a rooftop pool that afford impressive views over the Capitolio Building and this area of central Havana - the hotel Parque Central or the hotel Saratoga both offer this facility.
Havana is a great place to lose yourself, wandering around the streets of the old city. Calle Obispo - Bishop Street - is a good orientation of Old Havana as it cuts through the area from Parque Central to the Plaza de Armas, one of Havana's finest squares. Stop here for a drink or a meal, buy secondhand books at the makeshift market or continue your tour by continuing to the Cathedral, two blocks away.
At night the City really comes to life. Small bars in the old city feel like they haven't changed for decades. Have a cold Cristal beer, a Havana Club rum or a Mojito, currently Cuba's most popular alcoholic export. Later, head over to the Miramar district of the City to dance the night away in a Casa De La Musica, where traditional rhythms and modern beats mix together to create an unforgettable night. |
