ITINERARY
All the
main ingredients for a wonderful holiday, combining windswept sandy beaches,
friendly people, highlights of Sri Lanka's cultural triangle and the
picturesque lakeside town of Kandy. A superb short tour
of some of the country's most renowned sites, followed by time to relax on
the beach.
DAY 1
Fly SriLankan Airlines from Heathrow.
DAY 2
On arrival transfer to the colonial Mount Lavinia hotel in a Standard room for one
night to relax and enjoy your surroundings.
DAY 3
After breakfast drive north to the charming, three
star Hotel Sigiriya in Sigiriya
in a Standard room for overnight. En route visit the sacred caves of Dambulla with their statues of Buddha and views over the
surrounding forests. In the evening, enjoy a bird walk with your tour leader
(approx. 150 miles, 4½ hours drive).
DAY 4
After breakfast relax or take an optional visit to the lofty Sigiriya Rock Fortress (at extra cost, bookable locally). The views from the top make up for the
tough climb. Depart for Kandy, visiting a Batik factory and
spice garden en route. Enjoy afternoon sightseeing of Kandy including the famous Temple of the Tooth, which houses
Buddha’s tooth relic, Market Square and Upper Lake Drive. Tonight enjoy a cultural show.
Overnight at the simple Topaz hotel in a Standard room (approx. 85 miles, 2½
hours drive).
DAY 5
Morning drive to the Botanical gardens where you will see tropical plants
from all over the world. Continue south to a tea plantation and factory.
Drive to the popular Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage,
where you may see baby elephants being fed or bathed. Lunch at a local
restaurant. After lunch, proceed to the beach hotel of your choice for four
or more nights on the beach or your chosen hotel at the appropriate cost
(approx. 130 miles, 5½ hours drive).
